Le train du desert Mauritania
Even the question of where Mauritania is located is not something everyone can answer immediately.
In the 50s of the last century.
When Moors and people of black descent turned the prevailing nomadism into a state, christened it Mauritania and became independent from France in 1960, it was clear that there were huge deposits of iron ore in the north of the new country.
From Zérouate – where these occurrences are located – to Nouadhibou on the Atlantic Ocean, the journey is 620km.
Let’s build a railway line was the answer.
Today, around 600 wagons of iron ore are transported to the sea on three trains a day, each carrying 100 tons.
7,000 people are responsible for ensuring everything runs smoothly.
Lots of Sahara
Lots of pure nature
Cultural highlights: Chinguetti, the seventh holy site of Islam
The second highest monoliths on earth around 600m high
High-tech in the mines
Railway fans freak out when the “grand minéralier” passes by.
